Painting Guidelines
Paint application is a specialist field and the painting tradesperson is responsible for the final appearance of the product we pre-hang. As a pre-hanger we supply a pre-hung door and cannot be held responsible for any client dissatisfaction that results from the finished coatings or paint applications – especially where these have not been applied to the manufacturers specification.
Therefore, as a general guide, we have attached the following specifications [data sheets] from respected paint manufacturers supplying into the NZ market. These specifications are applicable for MDF interior doors and associated timber trim.
These specifications have been provided by Paint Manufacturers [Resene and Dulux] in consultation with the Door Manufacturers [Humes, Hallmark and Superior Doors] and are considered applicable to NZ conditions.
From the specifications we note the following key points (extracted for reference):
Prior to the application of any undercoat or sealing product; all doors are to be prepared by cleaning any residual contaminates from the skins, attending/filling any imperfections, sanding the full surface and removing any dust.
The appropriate undercoat or sealer must be used to complement the top coats intended.
The recommended/specified coverage (m2/l) must be applied.
The recommended paint thickness (microns of dry film) must be applied.
Correct drying times must be allowed
Water borne paints may cause a grain raise – this must be sanded
A full paint system requires the top and bottoms (and rear style in cavity sliders) to be fully sealed and painted to the same specification as the rest of the door.
Dulux specify the first coat to be applied by brush.
Resene state that spray application of first coat is not preferred and indicate that 2 undercoats be considered with sanding between.
General Guidelines
We offer standard 35mm Hollowcore doors with 3mm skins as a basic door option – this door is not intended to have a premium spray paint (or gloss) finish.
We recommend a 38mm “Premium 4.75mm skin” door be selected if a spray paint finish is to be applied.
